2 stars- a disappointment. A complete disappointment.

I first started reading Sarah J. Maas’ books recently, finishing the whole Throne of Glass series within a week. Then I heard about her new series- ACOTAR, or A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Worldbuilding, such as Throne of Glass? Check.
A girl who survives on her own and relies on no one? Check.
A kick-ass female character? CHECK, for sure.
Surely it couldn’t be that different from The Hunger Games, could it?
Me at that moment: SIGNMEUP SIGNMEUP SIGNMEUP

Sure, the book was okay at first glance. I got my hands on a copy of the book a day after it was released. I read it through and couldn’t stop until I reached the end- WARNING: COMPLETELY ADDICTIVE- I bet I would have rated 4 to 5 stars while reading. Let me make this clear, this book did not meet my expectations. But it was entertaining for at least a short while, and was captivating, true to Sarah J. Maas’ style.

And at last I finished the book- then everything came to me- like, WHAT? WHY DID I JUST READ THIS?

No. Just no.

I had numerous issues with this book-
1. Can you (Feyre) just sit still for one moment and try not to kill yourself by obeying orders for once? CALM DOWN.
2. Basically, Tamlin (perfect, beautiful, gorgeous, magical Tamlin) is like, “It’s your fault you almost got raped!” Have some sympathy, at least. THIS IS FEYRE. OF COURSE SHE WON’T BOTHER TO OBEY, what did you expect?
3. Herself. Good-looking, dresses, and the tattoo HAD to be of some pretty, flowery inked design. Is it just me, or does it really bug you when characters are flawless? (Cough cough, Feyre and Tamlin.)

Basically, this book just felt like Mary-Sue and Gary-Stu wannabe romance, with random fits thrown in and a boring plot.

The reason I didn’t give this one star was because the book wasn’t ENTIRELY bad. It was good enough to read at the moment (ignoring the flaws) and the character Lucien was truly intruiging. PLUS: Bonus points for having abeautiful cover. Way to go, aced it.

And here is one thing I absolutely LOVED and one thing I disliked:
The cover of this book was amazing- the colours worked out perfectly, the design was nice, the way the title was styled with the font and everything made A Court of Thorns and Roses one of my favourite covers of all time.
The thing I disliked (but didn’t bother me too much) was the title, because the story had nothing to do with thorns and roses.

To sum it up, this book was a fast read and I couldn’t put it down, but so clichéd and the perfectness of the characters irked me. Feyre was NOT a likeable character for me, though Lucien was. The love triangle in this book just didn’t work out for me, but the ending wasn’t that bad.

Although I rated this 1 1/2 to 2 stars, I’m still going to read the sequel. How worse could it get? Throne of Glass was just as bad, but Crown of Midnight was amazing. Who knows? Maybe this series will get better.2 stars- a disappointment. A complete disappointment.
